Chevy 5.3 Lifter Replacement Cost: Silverado, Sierra & Tahoe (2026)
Last updated: November 2026 · By the service team at Autos of Chicago, Arlington Heights, IL
A ticking noise from your Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Suburban or Yukon, especially with a flashing check engine light, is often a failed lifter. GM's 5.3L and 6.2L V8s use special cylinder-deactivation lifters to save fuel, and when one sticks, the repair gets expensive fast if you keep driving. Here's what lifter replacement costs in 2026, how to recognize the warning signs, and how to avoid a much bigger bill.
Quick answer: Replacing collapsed lifters on a Chevy or GMC 5.3L or 6.2L V8 typically costs $2,450 to $2,950 for one side of the engine, $3,200 to $3,850 for both sides, and $3,850 to $4,600 if the camshaft is damaged. Caught early, it's a lifter job. If you keep driving on a collapsed lifter, it can grind the camshaft and send metal through the engine.

| Both sides, camshaft OK | Both heads, all 16 lifters and trays, lifter oil manifold (VLOM), gaskets and bolts | $3,200 – $3,850 |

Franchise dealer quotes for the same work are often higher because of higher labor rates. Final price depends on your engine, model year and what we find during teardown, and we'll give you a written estimate before we start.
Which trucks and SUVs are affected?
- 5.3L V8: L83 (about 2014–2018, Active Fuel Management) and L84 (2019+, Dynamic Fuel Management).
- 6.2L V8: L86 (AFM) and L87 (DFM).
- Vehicles: Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Tahoe, Suburban; GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon; Cadillac Escalade (6.2L).
AFM vs. DFM: Active Fuel Management shuts off four cylinders (1, 4, 6 and 7) on the highway. Dynamic Fuel Management, introduced for 2019, can shut off any cylinder in many combinations, so it uses more deactivating lifters.
Symptoms of a failing lifter
- Ticking on cold start that fades after 30 to 60 seconds. This is an early warning.
- A steady tick that doesn't go away when warm and speeds up with engine RPM.
- Misfire and a flashing check engine light, with codes P0300 through P0308. A "Service StabiliTrak" message often appears too.
- Rough running, loss of power or stalling. At this stage, stop driving and have it towed.
Lifter tick vs. injector tick: These engines use direct injection, so a light, fast, even clicking is normal. A failing lifter sounds heavier and louder, like a tapping or slapping from under one valve cover, and is often paired with a misfire code.
Can you keep driving with a collapsed lifter?
No. A collapsed lifter can turn sideways and grind against the camshaft. In as little as 50 to 100 miles, the cam lobe can be worn flat and metal particles circulate through the oil, turning a lifter repair into a camshaft job or worse. If you have a flashing check engine light and a loud tick, park it and call us.
Does an AFM disabler fix a ticking lifter?
No. A plug-in disabler only stops the engine computer from switching into cylinder-deactivation mode. It can help reduce wear on healthy lifters, but it can't fix a lifter that has already collapsed or a damaged camshaft.
How to help prevent lifter failure
- Change your oil more often than the oil life monitor suggests. About every 5,000 miles with a dexos-approved full synthetic in the grade your owner's manual specifies.
- Don't ignore a tick. Early diagnosis is the difference between a lifter job and a camshaft job.
- Consider a disabler on a healthy engine if you want to reduce deactivation cycling (check how it may affect your warranty first).
Is GM covering lifter failures?
There is no federal safety recall for 5.3L lifter failures. A class-action lawsuit over AFM/DFM lifters is ongoing. If your truck has had lifter work, keep your repair receipts in case a settlement or extended warranty is announced. Check with a GM dealer whether your VIN is covered by any warranty or special coverage before paying for repairs.
