How Much Does Paintless Dent Repair Cost? (2026 Price Guide)
Last updated: November 2026 · By the body shop team at Autos of Chicago, Arlington Heights, IL
Got a door ding from a parking lot or a hood full of hail dents? Paintless dent repair (PDR) is usually the fastest and cheapest fix, and it keeps your factory paint. Here's what PDR costs in 2026, what drives the price up or down, and when you need a traditional body shop repair instead.
Quick answer: Paintless dent repair typically costs $75 to $175 for a small door ding, $150 to $450 for a medium or large dent, and $300 to $800 for a sharp crease. Hail damage usually runs $50 to $125 per dent, or roughly $1,000 to $4,500+ for a whole car. Most PDR repairs take a few hours, not days.
Paintless dent repair prices by dent size (2026)
| Type of damage | Typical PDR cost | Body shop repair with paint |
|---|---|---|
| Small door ding (under 1", dime to quarter size) | $75 – $175 | $350 – $600 |
| Medium dent (1" – 2", golf ball size) | $150 – $300 | $500 – $900 |
| Large dent (3"+, baseball size) | $250 – $450 | $750 – $1,400 |
| Crease or dent on a body line | $300 – $800 per panel | $800 – $1,800+ |
| Hail damage (per dent) | $50 – $125 | Often panel replacement |
| Hail damage (whole car) | $1,000 – $4,500+ | $3,000 – $10,000+ |
Ranges are typical 2026 U.S. prices from published PDR price guides. Your exact price depends on the factors below. The only way to know for sure is an in-person estimate.
What makes paintless dent repair cost more (or less)?
- Size and depth. A shallow, round ding is quick. A deep dent stretches the metal and takes far more time.
- Location. Dents on a body line, near a panel edge, or on a roof rail are harder to reach and harder to finish perfectly.
- Access. If the technician has to remove a door panel, headliner or taillight to reach the back of the dent, labor goes up.
- Aluminum panels. Aluminum is less forgiving than steel and usually costs 25% to 50% more to repair. Many trucks and luxury vehicles use it, including the Ford F-150, Range Rover, Audi, Tesla and many BMW and Mercedes-Benz panels.
- Number of dents. Shops often discount additional dents on the same visit, and hail is priced on a dent-count matrix.
- Paint condition. PDR only works if the paint isn't cracked or chipped. Damaged paint means a traditional repair.
When paintless dent repair won't work
PDR is ideal for dings, small dents and most hail. You'll need traditional body work and paint when:
- The paint is cracked, chipped or scratched through to the metal.
- The metal is sharply creased or stretched beyond its original shape.
- The dent is on a seam, a panel's outer edge or a previously repaired area with body filler.
- The panel is plastic, such as most bumper covers. Those are repaired differently (see our scratch and paint repair guide).
When paint work is needed, a computer-matched color and proper blending make the repair invisible. Here's why computerized paint matching matters.
How paintless dent repair works
- Inspect under a light board. A reflective LED board shows the exact shape and depth of the dent.
- Get behind the panel. The technician reaches the back of the dent through an existing opening or by removing a trim piece.
- Massage the metal out. Specialized rods push the dent out gradually in many small, controlled pushes.
- Glue pull where needed. If the back can't be reached, a glue tab is bonded to the dent and pulled out, then removed cleanly.
- Tap down and finish. High spots around the dent are leveled until the panel reflects light like it did from the factory.
How long does it take? A single ding is often done in 1 to 2 hours. A whole car of hail damage typically takes 1 to 3 days. A traditional body shop repair with paint usually takes several days.
Does insurance cover paintless dent repair?
- Hail: Usually yes, under comprehensive coverage, minus your deductible.
- Someone else hit your car: Their insurance should cover it.
- Parking lot door ding, no one to claim against: Usually covered under collision, but a $75 to $175 repair is often less than your deductible. Paying out of pocket is usually smarter.
- Liability-only policy: It won't pay for damage to your own car.
Your insurer may recommend a shop, but you can choose where your car is repaired. Check your policy and deductible before you file a small claim.
Fix dents before you trade in, sell or return a lease
Dents cost you money when the car changes hands:
- Lease returns: Leasing companies often charge for dents larger than about a credit card at turn-in. A few PDR repairs beforehand usually cost less than those charges.
- Trade-ins and sales: Visible dents lower an appraisal. PDR keeps the factory paint, so there's no repaint for a buyer's paint gauge to find.

Paintless dent repair in Chicago winters
Cold metal is stiffer and more likely to crack paint when it's pushed, so PDR should be done inside a heated shop, not in a parking lot in January. Chicagoland's spring and summer storms also bring hail, so if you're shopping for a used car, check the roof and hood under good light.
